Fuel cards for business

Fuel is one of the few large business costs that is bought in small pieces, several times a week, by people who are not in the office. A business fuel card pulls that spending back onto one account with one invoice, and gives you a record of every litre.

FuelPoint works with Queensland businesses using at least 50,000 litres of fuel annually across diesel, petrol or a combination of both. We review what you are buying now and help you establish the right Shell Card arrangement.

Who this suits

Most businesses arrive at a fuel card for one of three reasons, and the review looks a little different for each.

  • First fuel-card arrangement: you have grown past the point where receipts and reimbursements are workable, and you want the spending on one account before it gets harder to unpick.
  • Reviewing an existing provider: you already hold cards but have never checked whether the terms still match your volume, your fuel mix or where your vehicles actually refuel.
  • Cost pressure: fuel has become a line item the business notices, and a per-litre improvement across the year is worth chasing.
  • Reporting and administration: your bookkeeper spends time each month matching receipts to vehicles, and you want that replaced with an exportable record.

What you get from a Shell Card arrangement

Shell Card is issued by Viva Energy Australia. FuelPoint is an independent authorised Shell Card sales agent — we review your fuel use, help establish the arrangement, and stay on as your local point of contact in Queensland.

  • Potential savings: potential fuel discounts of 6–8 cents per litre, depending on fuel type and the approved arrangement.
  • Simpler administration: one account and one invoicing cycle instead of a pile of dockets and personal reimbursements.
  • Consolidated reporting: litres, product, site, date and card for every transaction, exportable into your accounting system.
  • Purchase controls: restrict cards by product, apply limits, and require prompts so each fill is traceable.
  • Visibility: see what is being spent, where and by whom, without waiting for month end.
  • Local assistance: a Queensland contact who helps you choose the right arrangement rather than a generic sign-up page.

Small business or growing business?

"Small business" covers a wide range. A two-van operation and a fifteen-vehicle trade business have very different fuel profiles, and it is the annual litres — not the badge — that determine whether a card arrangement makes commercial sense.

FuelPoint works with Queensland businesses using at least 50,000 litres of fuel annually. Below that level, a card can still tidy up administration, but we will tell you plainly if it is not worth changing what you have.

Start with your own numbers

Before any conversation about arrangements, it helps to know what your fleet actually consumes. The fuel spend calculator on our homepage estimates your annual litres and spend from your vehicle mix and emails you a written snapshot.

From there you can read how the card itself works on our Shell fuel card page, see the fleet-specific detail on fleet fuel cards, or walk through the process on how to get a Shell Card.

Business fuel card FAQs

What is a business fuel card?
A business fuel card lets your staff refuel on a company account rather than paying personally or with a company credit card. Purchases are captured centrally with the site, date, product and litres recorded, then billed on one consolidated statement.
Does my business qualify for a Shell Card through FuelPoint?
FuelPoint works with Queensland businesses using at least 50,000 litres of fuel annually across diesel, petrol or a combination of both. Qualification is based on annual fuel consumption rather than the number of vehicles you run.
How much can a business save with a fuel card?
Potential fuel discounts of 6–8 cents per litre may be available, depending on fuel type and the approved arrangement. The saving that matters is the one applied to your own annual volume, which is what we work through together in a fuel spend review.
Is a fuel card better than a company credit card for fuel?
A credit card records a dollar amount. A fuel card records the litres, product, site and time, and can be restricted to fuel only. That difference is what makes reconciliation, reporting and fuel tax credit substantiation far simpler.
